Entries for the girls’ section of SuperCupNI 2024 are now officially open and tournament chairperson Victor Leonard said that the organisers are keen to build upon the success of the 2023 tournament.
The tournament will take place between 21st July and 26th July next summer and Leonard admitted there has already been a number of enquiries about the female section.
“The girls’ tournament has grown incredibly over the last number of years and even before we even opened entries, we have been contacted by interested clubs who are keen to attend and test themselves against some of the very best.
“We were absolutely delighted with the success of the 2023 girls’ tournament, and it was fantastic to see a huge crowd at Dixon Park for the Premier final, where over 500 spectators were in attendance to watch Northern Ireland defeat Surf Select.
“The tournament was incredibly well received in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area and there was some fantastic crowds at each of the four venues.
“After the tournament we spoke to all of the teams, and they were all absolutely overwhelmed with the hospitality and warm welcome they received at each of the grounds. Everyone concerned with the tournament is excited to see the girls’ section develop and prosper again next summer.”
Last summer, the girls’ Premier tournament was won by Northern Ireland and the Junior section saw Surf Select triumph over Linfield on penalties after a pulsating 4-4 draw.
The girls’ tournament in 2024 will consist of two age groups, the Junior section, for players born on or after 1st January 2010 (U14) and the Premier section, for players born on or after 1st January 2008 (U16).
Each section will consist of 8 teams and in the likelihood that the age groups are oversubscribed the organisers have implemented the following criteria, geographical location, their record of achievement in their respective league/competition, their previous performances at the tournament and the organisers may seek references from various trusted football sources to ensure they will provide strong competition to their relevant section.
