Match Report: O’Higgins v GPS Bayern

Two quick fire goals in the first five minutes proved just about enough to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Goals from Williams Munoz and Wilson Martinez in the opening exchanges helped the Chilean side see off a plucky GPS Bayern side.

The reigning champions opened the lead with their first attack. A long range effort was spilled by the GPS ‘keeper and Munoz was quick to react to tuck home the opening goal.

Moments later it was 2-0, a cross-field ball caught out the GPS defence and Martinez nodded the ball past the onrushing GPS goalkeeper.

Credit to GPS, they knuckled down after conceding the second goal and a quick free kick from Westadt saw Tani Oluwaseyi rise highest but he couldn’t keep his header down.

Oluwaseyi was a constant threat on the counter and he latched on to a through ball just before the interval but his shot lacked any power to trouble Leandro Ortubia in the Chilean goal.

Oluwaseyi almost grabbed an early second half goal, but Ortubia was equal to his effort after the GPS attacker had pirouetted his way past two Chilean defenders.

O’Higgins were struggling to get their foot on the ball and control the second half.

Martinez almost grabbed a third goal for the reigning champions as he connected with a cross from Monardes, but Martinez couldn’t keep his header down and it cleared the bar.

GPS added another striker to the fray and they were rewarded for their bravery as Paul Kondratowicz found half a yard of space in the box and fired in off the near post to hand the American side a lifeline.

However, it was a case of too little too late for American side as O’Higgins held on to secure a clash with Club America in the semi-finals.
