Glentoran 0
Loughgall 2
The opening game of Group D in the Minor section got underway this morning with Glentoran taking on Loughgall.
Both teams were eager to get off to a strong start, with Glentoran having the first big chance of the game. Loughgall were caught playing out from the back, leading to them being dispossessed and the ball falling to Junior Camara. He tried to go round the goalkeeper, however the ‘keeper stood up well, forced him wide, eventually leading to a corner. This was the only big opportunity in the first 20 minutes, as both teams eased themselves into the game.
Loughgall then took the lead, as a long ball was lofted over the defence. It looked like the Glentoran goalkeeper was going to clean it up, however, he missed the ball. This allowed Cillian Rafferty to tap the ball into an empty net. Loughgall led 1-0 at half time.
Glentoran came out of the traps quickly in the second half, as another big chance fell to Alfie Davidson. After some skilful play on the wing, he cut inside but was unable to get his shot on target, as it flew over the bar.
Both teams struggled to create any meaningful chances after this.
Loughgall then doubled their lead through Eoghan Mallon. Glentoran had a free kick on the halfway line, which they pushed numbers forward for, seeking an equaliser. Loughgall were able to launch a counter attack, with Mallon having a one on one with the goalkeeper. He remained composed, side footing his effort off the post and into the bottom corner. Glentoran continued to dominate possession after the goal, but couldn’t do anything to prevent a loss.
Tomorrow, Loughgall move on to play Celtic, while Glentoran play USSSA.
