Fermanagh v Dundalk SL – Junior Section Match Report

County Fermanagh met Irish side Dundalk at Anderson Park, Coleraine in the Milk Cup Junior Section.

Fermanagh, in search of their first win of this year’s tournament, started well with striker, Sean Cassidy getting good service from his team. However, Dundalk weren’t making it easy for them, and looked strong on the counter, as they pressed to open the scoring. Fermanagh had the game’s first clear cut chance when some excellent work by Niall Owens gave his side a corner, which lead to a shot from Luke Flanagan going just over the bar. Fermanagh did however get their reward, when another corner was adjudged to have hit a Dundalk defender’s arm, thereby giving Fermanagh a penalty. Callum Jones stepped up to take it, and finished well past Dundalk goalkeeper David Hayes. Dundalk had chances to level in the first half, with Odhran Kieran having a goal disallowed for offside. Meanwhile Fermanagh Captain Jake Irvine produced an assured performance to help control the midfield for his team.

The second half was largely one of few chances, with Fermanagh dominating again. Good work again by Niall Owens nearly resulted in another goal, however Dundalk did well to cope with the increasing pressure. Dundalk pushed hard for an equaliser, and had Fermanagh pinned back in their own half for much of the final ten minutes. But their attempts failed to materialise, as Fermanagh coped well to keep them out again. A good day for Fermanagh who deserved the victory, but a frustrating one for Dundalk, who were left to regret missed chances.
