Match Report: Newcastle v Co Armagh

Jul 28, 2018 | Premier Section

Newcastle United are the 2018 Super Cup Globe champions following a resounding 3-0 victory over County Armagh at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

The Magpies opened the scoring just 3 minutes in, Kain Reed with a wonderful volley across Armagh keeper David Walsh that nestled beautifully in the bottom corner.

It could have been 2-0 just minutes later, Thomas Cole’s lob sailing just over the bar after Max Allen played a superb ball over the top of the Armagh defence.

Armagh were struggling cope with Newcastle’s quality on the ball and couldn’t get any sort of a foothold in the game. Despite this, they could have been level 9 minutes in, Harry Anderson’s flicked finish ending up just wide of the post.

Newcastle’s lead was eventually doubled 19 minutes in, Thomas Cole left unmarked from a corner to guide a shot nicely past Walsh in the Armagh goal.

The game was beyond Armagh 5 minutes later, Joe White slotting in from close range after some neat passing play from Newcastle on the edge of the penalty area.

Armagh’s best chance of scoring appeared to be from a set-piece, given their height advantage. Lee Upton had a great headed chance 28 minutes in, but his nodded effort sailed just over William Brown’s crossbar from Ryan Carmichael’s corner.

Newcastle were unlucky not to add to the score line early into the second half, Joe White with some superb footwork to glide past two Armagh defenders before his effort was cleared off the line by Jack McIvor.

Armagh looked very much like a team that was playing it’s fifth game in 5 days, and they only had sub keeper Daniel Acheson to thank for keeping the score line respectable, first parrying away Thomas Cole’s low drive and then saving brilliantly one-on one from Kain Reed.

Ryan Carmichael came just inches away from giving the men in orange a consolation goal on 60 minutes, his strike from 30 yards out flying narrowly wide with Brown rooted to the spot.

Despite a better second half performance from the county side, the men in black and white would go to record a comfortable victory to give them the 2018 Super Cup Globe title.
