Match Report: Greenisland 1 v 3 Charlton Athletic

Jul 26, 2022 | Youth Section

Charlton Athletic bounced back from an opening day draw with Crusaders to grab their first three points of the competition against a plucky Greenisland side.

It was a nervy start from both sides with neither team really able to knit together any meaningful attacks.

With 9 minutes gone Greenisland took the lead in fortuitous circumstances. A free kick into the box was cleared but on the second phase the ball bounced off the hand of Charlton defender and the referee pointed to the spot.

Greenisland skipper Alex Watson saw his spot kick well saved but Callum McCloy was alert and reacted quickly to fire home the loose ball.
This goal seemed to shock Charlton into life and just four minutes later they were level. Good work from Ezewata saw Reid released down the left and he poked into the corner of the net to level the scores.

Just 10 minutes later the Londoners were ahead as Reid received the ball from Richman and twisted and turned past some tackles before firing into the far corner.

Greenisland came out for the second half determined to grab the next goal and the industrious Watson nearly pounced on a loose back pass but Spencer in the Charlton goal was able to block his effort.

Moments later Charlton scored a third goal to kill off any hopes of a Greenisland fightback. Luke Northwood found some space on the right and his cross deflected kindly into the path of Harry Bingham and the smallest player on the pitch stooped to nod the ball past Blake Henry.
Charlton nearly grabbed a fourth with just minutes left when the impressive Reid once again made ground down the left and his slide rule pass found Ezenwata but he lost his footing and stumbled as he was about to shoot.

That was the last major event of an entertaining game at the Heights and Charlton will have their sights set on the semi-finals as they take on Loughgall and Greenisland will hope to end the group stage on a high in their Antrim derby v Crusaders.
