Match Report: Co Down v Co Fermanagh

Jul 26, 2017 | Premier Section

County Fermanagh claimed their first points of the tournament after a last gasp winner from Callum Jones secured them bragging rights in a pulsating Ulster derby clash at Clough.

With seconds remaining on the clock, Niall Owens teed up Jones from a free-kick and the Fermanagh left back rifled the ball past the Down goalkeeper.

It was the Mourne men that took the lead in what was a hectic first half.

Tom Mathieson showed great composure to cut inside on the left and curl a stunning effort past Josh Brownlee to open the scoring.

However, their lead didn’t last long as Jones whipped in a stunning free-kick from wide on the right and Brandon Horan got the slightest of touches to divert the ball in to the goal from a few yards out.

Just before the interval, Down were back in front when Seanie Mahon was adjudged to have fouled a Down attacker inside the area, a decision which looked harsh at the time.

Callum Ferris calmly slotted past Brownlee to give Down the lead at the interval.
Fermanagh were out of the blocks early on in the second half with Love, Owens and McBrien all making ground and pushing Down backwards.

Just when it looked like Down were going to hold on and grab their first win of the tournament, Conor Love produced a moment of magic to acrobatically draw Fermanagh level.

The Erne County now had their tails up and with just seconds remaining, Owens was brought down on the edge of the area and he dusted himself down to lay the ball off to Jones, who rifled a stunning free-kick into the bottom corner to secure all three points for Darren Higginbotham’s charges.
