Real Sociedad secured a win in their first match despite some samba style football and a dominant first half display from Ponte Preta.
Ponte Preta started brightly, eager to impose themselves on their Spanish opponents early on. The Brazilians were having joy down the right hand side but struggled to fashion a clear opening; the chances they were creating were frequently met by the linesman’s offside flag.
Ponte Preta’s first clear opening came after some good interchange play in the middle of the park, the first shot was spilled by the goalkeeper and Wallison shot wide with the rebound.
Sociedad were mainly restricted to long balls and counterattacking football with the Brazilians dominating possession.
Ponte Preta finally took the lead when Lyncon slotted a penalty into the bottom right hand corner; Jon Ander Obeso was the culprit for Sociedad, first being caught in possession, then hacking down the opposing striker.
They almost added a second shortly after, Wallison saw his acrobatic overhead kick drift just over the bar.
But against the run of play, Sociedad drew level. Roberto Lopez scored a superb freekick by placing the ball into the top right hand corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The second half began scrappy with neither team managing to get a foothold in the game. Sociedad, who started the second half better than they did the first, took the lead. Nace Koprivnik was put through on goal and finished well past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Ponte Preta had chances to draw level, but squandered them. Joao Pedro had their best chance shooting wide after latching onto a nice through ball.
The remainder of the second half was mainly fought in the middle of the park, much to the frustration of the Brazilian side; Real Sociedad ending the game 2-1 winners and marching onto their second game with a win under their belts.
