The organisers of one of Europe’s best known youth football tournaments could be victims of their own success.
The newly launched mini section at this summer’s SuperCupNI in Ulster has proved such an attraction that it has landed the committee with a major problem.
“We wanted to test the water with the under-13 competition after a trial run a few years ago but we had no idea it would be so popular,” says chairman Victor Leonard.
“Since we unveiled plans in December there has been a massive response and in fact when entries closed last weekend we found ourselves oversubscribed.”
Now the team behind one of the world’s most successful international youth competitions is holding a special meeting to discuss the next step.
“We had planned to start with eight teams, however, in the circumstances, we may well have to increase the numbers in the under 13 section,” explained Victor.
The SuperCupNI will run from July 23-27 with the welcome parade of competing teams in Coleraine on Sunday, July 22.
